The Northern Region Football Association Association Chairperson Lameck Zetu Khonje has described Luwinga Technical Centre as a failed project saying Football Association of Malawi has failed to finish the project for over 15 years.

Khonje said this during association’s Annual General Meeting held in Chitipa on Sunday 12 November 2023.

Khonje expressed his disappointment saying the football governing body has failed to kick start the project which has been under construction for the past 15 years.

“As an association we had high hopes on Luwinga Technical Centre but they(FAM) have been changing tunes as they said we will have artificial turf to host Super League they changed to a school of excellence then now it’s an academy, early this year they said it to be operational by August but up to now it’s a still construction site so we are disappointed.” Khonje said.

During the meeting the association highlighting several successes like holding leagues and cups on time including violence free competition while expecting the same this season and increased revenue.

“We finished our leagues and cups on time and produced a better team last season hence my decision to buy over 35 replicas for all delegates as one way of supporting the team, but we are not impressed with our two teams Moyale Barracks and Ekwendeni Hammers who are fighting for relegation in the super league and we expect to generate more money going forward with new ideas discussed here.” said Khonje.

Among other decisions made during the meeting, the association’s longest serving treasurer Chauka Mwasinga will fill the void left by vice Chairperson Mabuchi Mkandawire who has been out of the country for years while Felix Chipeta is the new treasurer to suit the constitutional demand of having a qualified accountant as association treasurer.

The association also described Fleetwood Haiya as their preferred candidate for the upcoming Fam General Elections describing him as its friend in need who bankrolled the association’s top four bonanza and promised an increase in the next bonanza.

One of the delegates Alphack Mkandawire from Mzuzu District Committee described the meeting as fruitful while indicating it has resolved several topical issues.

“As district committees we can say it was a fruitful meeting we have discussed issues to do with players, game and revenue management this will definitely change how we manage our affairs including filling the positions”. Mkandawire said.

The association is expected to use more than K150 million to run several leagues and cups with the help from several sponsors in the next season and is expected to have the next AGM in Nkhatabay.
