Football fans in Malawi’s Northern Region are calling on the Football Association of Malawi (FAM) and the Malawi National Council of Sports to organise a special visit for the Malawi women’s national football team, the Scorchers, to celebrate their historic achievement with supporters in the region.

The fans say the Scorchers’ remarkable performance at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) has united Malawians and deserves to be celebrated beyond the Central and Southern regions.

A Mzuzu-based football fan, Chisomo Banda, said bringing the Scorchers to the North would give supporters an opportunity to personally honour the players.

“We followed the Scorchers throughout their historic campaign and felt proud as Malawians. We are asking FAM and the Sports Council to bring them to the North so that we can celebrate with them,” Banda said.

Another fan, Mary Mbewe, said the visit would also inspire young girls in the region to pursue football.

“The Scorchers have shown our girls that they can achieve great things through football. Having them here would be a huge inspiration,” she said.

She added by asking FAM President Fleetwood Haiya to consider north on this historic achievement celebration.

Meanwhile, football enthusiast Peter Nyirenda urged the authorities to make the Northern Region part of the national celebrations.

“This achievement belongs to every Malawian. FAM and the Sports Council should consider taking the celebrations to the North because supporters here also played their part by cheering the team from home,” Nyirenda said.

The supporters believe a Scorchers visit to the North would not only celebrate the team’s historic achievement but also promote women’s football and strengthen support for the national team across the country.
