A second-year University of Malawi student from Mzimba has received a major boost toward completing his studies after the Jane Ansah Foundation responded to his financial challenges.

Kingsley James Tembo, who is studying Library and Information Sciences, has been assisted with items and financial support valued at more than K1 million.

The package includes food and groceries, pocket money, transport assistance and various school requirements intended to help him cope with the demands of university life.

Tembo, who has short stature and is locally referred to in Chichewa as “akafula,” comes from Kafikule Village in Mzimba. He turned to the foundation after struggling to meet his daily needs while studying away from his home district.

The assistance comes as the University of Malawi prepares to reopen on August 31, 2026, with Tembo saying the intervention will help him return to his studies with less financial pressure.

He also expressed appreciation for an earlier meeting with Vice President Dr Jane Ansah at her Lilongwe residence, describing the experience as positive and inspiring.

Tembo said the warm reception was particularly meaningful because people with short stature can sometimes experience social barriers and difficulties being fully accepted.

He further praised the foundation for supporting a range of vulnerable people, including older persons, people with disabilities and persons with albinism.

Reverend Rodgers Tenthema Edward Kamanga, Acting Chairperson of the foundation’s Board of Trustees, said the organisation’s focus is on helping vulnerable people gain the capacity to improve their lives and become economically independent.

Kamanga said the foundation is currently refining a five-pillar strategic plan, which places socio-economic empowerment among its major priorities. He said the initiative is aligned with Malawi’s Vision 2063 and government policies promoting inclusion and equal opportunity.

According to Kamanga, the assistance provided to Tembo is intended to create an opportunity for him to pursue his ambitions rather than foster dependence.

“Kingsley has a vision for his future and what he needed was a destiny helper,” Kamanga said.

He said the foundation’s broader vision is to ensure that every Malawian, regardless of their circumstances, has an opportunity to realise their potential, contribute to national development and participate fully in society.
