HRDC Demands Action Over K700 Million NOCMA Fraud

The Human Rights Defenders Coalition (HRDC) has called for immediate action following the reported loss of about K700 million at the National Oil Company of Malawi (NOCMA) in a suspected cyber-fraud incident.

NOCMA says it was duped into making a US$403,605 payment to fraudsters who allegedly impersonated Mozhandling Limited.

According to NOCMA, the payment was processed through its bankers, National Bank of Malawi, on April 29, 2026.

The company says investigations are underway, with relevant authorities working to establish how the fraudulent transaction occurred and recover the funds.

However, HRDC has demanded accountability, calling for those responsible for verifying and processing the payment to be investigated.

The development has raised concerns over financial controls at the state-owned fuel company, with calls for authorities to ensure that public funds are protected and that those found responsible face appropriate action.
