NBM Unveils K500 Million Division One Championship to Strengthen Malawi Football Pyramid
Malawi football has taken another giant leap forward with the launch of the K500 million National Bank of Malawi (NBM) Championship for Division One, a development that marks a critical step in completing the country’s football pyramid.

Speaking at the launch, Football Association of Malawi (FAM) President Fleetwood Haiya described the new competition as a game-changer for grassroots and semi-professional football.
“As a sign of our strong commitment to developing football, today we proudly launched the K500 million National Bank of Malawi Championship for Division One, a key step in completing the Malawi football pyramid,” Haiya said.

The football structure in Malawi is now fully established, running from district leagues, regional leagues, the National Division League, and finally the elite Super League. According to Haiya, this new pathway creates opportunities for young talent to grow systematically and aspire to the top level.
“From the district leagues, regional leagues, the National Division League, all the way up to the Super League — the football pathway is now robustly complete and systematically stronger than ever,” he emphasized.
Haiya also hailed NBM for its continued role in uplifting sports in Malawi, stressing that their investment is a major boost to FAM’s transformation agenda.
“We sincerely thank the Bank of the Nation (NBM) for coming through once again to support the growth of Malawi football. Our transformation agenda is on course, and we remain committed to leaving no stone unturned to see its ultimate fruition,” he said.

The NBM Division One Championship is expected to bridge the gap between regional football and the Super League, ensuring more competitive football, increased exposure for players, and a stronger pipeline of talent for the national team.
