A recent survey by the Platform for People’s Welfare has suggested that Bennex Mwamulima, the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) shadow Member of Parliament for Mzuzu City South East Constituency, is currently leading among candidates contesting in the area. The findings were released during a press conference held in Mzuzu.

Presenting the results, Melvin Nxumayo, chairperson of the Young Human Rights Defenders Network, said the survey showed Mwamulima ahead with 34 percent support. He was followed by independent candidate William Kaweche at 23 percent, Catherine Nyangulu of the United Transformation Movement (UTM) with 14 percent, and Faisal Imtiyaz of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) with 6 percent.

“We are non-partisan, which is why the Platform for People’s Welfare entrusted us with releasing the findings. We verified the tools used in this survey and found them reliable and effective,” Nxumayo said.

Reacting to the results, Mwamulima said he believed the survey reflected the views of people in the constituency, citing past development projects such as roads, school blocks, clinics, bridges, and the rehabilitation of the airport. He outlined future plans, including a new international airport, an international-standard stadium, and dual carriageways within the city.

“The current airport is undergoing rehabilitation, but what is needed is a fully-fledged international airport. I will also advocate for the construction of an international stadium to give people in the North access to both local and international matches,” Mwamulima said.

The survey indicated that Mwamulima’s visibility in the constituency and his development record contributed to his popularity.

According to organizers, the survey was conducted from 3 to 5 September 2025, targeting 100 respondents in each location. The sample included 70 women aged 18–35 and 30 men aged 36 and above. Areas covered were Geisha, Msongwe, Chiputula, Chibanja, Hilltop, and Masasa.

In total, nine shadow MPs are contesting in Mzuzu City South East Constituency. These include Bennex Mwamulima (MCP), William Kaweche (Independent), Catherine Nyangulu (UTM), Willard Likwemba (UDF), Faisal Imtiyaz (DPP), and Denis Mhone (Aford), among others.
