Tour De Mzuzu: Foundation Pushes for Recognition of Cycling in Malawi
Event to promote sports, health, tourism, and support orphans through Umoza Village fundraising
The People First Foundation has expressed concern that cycling remains one of the most overlooked sports in Malawi, despite its potential to boost national sports development, promote healthy living, and attract tourism.
Speaking to journalists in Mzuzu, Executive Director of the Foundation, Lumbani Kaunda, said this neglect is what has inspired their collaboration with Grand Palace Hotel to launch the Tour De Mzuzu, a long-distance cycling competition set for 26 July 2025. The race will cover a scenic route from Chintheche in Nkhatabay to Mzuzu Stadium.
“Cycling is not just a sport—it is a way of life. It enhances physical health, mental well-being, and can be a powerful tool to foster unity and development,” said Kaunda. “Unfortunately, it has not received the support and attention it deserves in Malawi. With the Tour De Mzuzu, we want to change that narrative.”
Kaunda said the event is also a fundraising initiative aiming to raise K61.5 million to complete the construction of Umoza Village, a permanent home for orphans under the care of the Foundation.
“We want to build not just houses, but hope. Umoza Village will offer shelter, love, and education to children who have nowhere else to go. Every kilometer our cyclists ride brings us closer to that dream,” Kaunda added.
On his part, Grand Palace Hotel General Manager Sam Phiri described the event as “a landmark initiative” that brings together sports and social impact.

“Cycling races like this are common in other parts of the world and attract thousands of participants and spectators. We believe Malawi can also tap into this potential,” said Phiri. “This race is more than competition—it’s an experience that promotes sports tourism and economic interaction between Nkhatabay and Mzuzu.”
He said Grand Palace is proud to be part of the event, calling on more partners to come on board in supporting a sport with great potential.
Registration for the race is expected to open soon, with organizers promising attractive prizes, safety support, and entertainment at the finishing point in Mzuzu.
