SULOM Apologises for Failed 2026 Season Opener, Takes Full Responsibility
The has issued a public apology following the failure to proceed with the highly anticipated launch of the 2026 FDH Bank Premiership.
In a press statement released on April 27, SULOM expressed regret over the events that unfolded on Saturday, April 25, at , where the official league opener was scheduled to take place.
The league governing body apologised to , participating teams, football stakeholders, and the general public for the inconvenience and disappointment caused by the abrupt cancellation.
SULOM also extended its apology to the Malawi Government, the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Culture, and the , acknowledging the collective effort that had gone into preparing for the event before concerns raised by FAM led to the closure of the stadium.
In its statement, SULOM moved to clarify speculation surrounding the incident, stressing that FDH Bank, as the league sponsor, had no influence over the choice of venue or any operational decisions.
“All decisions were made by SULOM in consideration of the best interests of the game and all stakeholders,” the statement read, adding that the body takes full responsibility for what transpired.
The league organisers revealed that they are now engaging FDH Bank to review the incident and develop strategies to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
SULOM further highlighted the sponsor’s commitment to Malawian football, noting that FDH Bank has already released MK500 million as part of its MK1 billion annual sponsorship package, with a portion of the funds already disbursed to clubs.
Despite the setback, SULOM expressed optimism that through dialogue and cooperation, the challenges can be resolved for the benefit of the game.
The body has pledged to provide further updates following its engagements with FDH Bank, concluding its statement with a rallying call: “Let Football Win.”
