In the wake of increasing political violence and blatant disregard for human rights in Malawi, the nation is gripped by a disturbing silence from its highest-ranking security officers.

The Inspector General of Police and the Commander of the Malawi Defence Force remain conspicuously quiet as citizens are beaten in broad daylight, some even in the presence of their subordinates.

This silence is not merely baffling—it is dangerous. In a democracy, such moments demand leadership, public assurance, and accountability.

When the protectors of the nation go mute amid escalating violence, the public is left to wonder: where do their loyalties lie?

Is this silence a sign of institutional failure, or worse, tacit approval of these brutal acts?

Public accountability is a cornerstone of security sector professionalism. The Inspector General and Army Commander must step forward, speak out, and act decisively to distance their institutions from lawlessness.

Malawians need to hear their voices—not only to restore public trust, but to reaffirm that the security agencies are not political tools but servants of the people.

If these commanders continue to remain silent, they risk eroding the fragile relationship between citizens and the forces that are meant to protect them.

Leadership during crises is not optional; it is a moral and constitutional obligation. Their silence is no longer just absence—it is a statement.

And if the message they are sending is indifference or complicity, then the country is in far more danger than we feared.
