UTM President Dalitso Kabambe has lambasted Malawi’s security apparatus, accusing them of complicity following a brutal attack on Sylvester Namiwa, a prominent member of Citizens for Credible Elections (CfCE).

Kabambe made the remarks on Friday after visiting Namiwa at a Lilongwe clinic, where the activist is receiving treatment for deep wounds sustained when panga-wielding assailants assaulted him on Thursday.

The opposition leader said he was appalled to learn that the attack occurred in the presence of security forces, who reportedly stood by without intervening.

“This is not the Malawi we fought for. This is not the freedom our parents and grandparents dreamt of,” Kabambe said. “We cannot remain silent as innocent citizens are butchered like animals in broad daylight—worse still, in the presence of the very institutions meant to protect us: the Malawi Police Service and the Malawi Defence Force.”

Kabambe’s visit and strong condemnation come amid growing concerns over the shrinking space for civil activism and alleged state-sponsored violence ahead of the 2025 general elections.
