Malawi’s Youth Take Center Stage: Enhancing Digital Inclusion for a Brighter Future
The Ministry of Youth and Sports is sounding the alarm on the urgent need to boost digital inclusion among young people, empowering them to harness technology and drive meaningful change.
Minister Uchizi Mkandawire emphasized this during a press briefing for the 2024 International Youth Day commemoration in Lilongwe.
Malawi’s 2024 IYD celebrations, slated for October 10-11 at Mgodi Primary School in Machinga District, will shine a light on the trailblazing role of young people in digital adoption and innovation despite the challenges they face.
This year’s localized theme, “From Clicks to Progress: Youth Digital Pathways for the achievement of Malawi 2063,” underscores the country’s commitment to leveraging technology for sustainable development.
The global community recognizes the potential of young people in driving digital progress. As United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres notes, “Achieving the Sustainable Development Goals requires a seismic shift – which can only happen if we empower young people and work with them as equals”.
With three-quarters of those aged 15-24 using the internet, youth are leading the charge in digital adoption and innovation.
However, disparities persist, particularly in low-income countries and among young women.
By fostering digital inclusion, Malawi aims to bridge these gaps and unlock the full potential of its youth. As the world marks International Youth Day, let’s celebrate the digital contributions of young people and inspire further innovation and collaboration towards achieving sustainable development.
