The Malawi Guardian, Hong Kong Chinese Media Body Forge Partnership

LILONGWE, September 16, — The Malawi Guardian and the Hong Kong Gonggong News Agency International Communication Centre have signed a friendship and cooperation agreement aimed at strengthening media exchanges, professional collaboration and information sharing between the two institutions.

The agreement was signed on September 13, 2026, with Mike Lyson Zgambo, Senior Editor of The Malawi Guardian, representing the Malawian media institution.

The partnership seeks to establish a relationship based on equality, mutual trust and shared development, while creating opportunities for media practitioners from the two institutions to learn from each other and share professional resources.

Under the agreement, the two institutions will strengthen communication and explore areas of cooperation through mutual visits, professional exchanges, seminars, academic activities and other media-related programmes.

The agreement provides for the organisations to conduct mutual group visits from time to time to explore new areas and approaches for expanding cooperation and achieving mutually beneficial outcomes.

The two institutions will also designate contact persons to facilitate regular communication and exchange information on their respective activities, while jointly promoting innovation and development in their areas of cooperation.

The agreement was facilitated by Jani Grey Kasunda, a Malawian based in China, who played a key role in bringing the two media institutions together.

The facilitation by Kasunda provides an opportunity to strengthen connections between Malawians living in China and institutions in Malawi, while opening space for greater media-to-media engagement between the two countries.

The Hong Kong Gonggong News Agency International Communication Centre has designated Huang Weijian as its contact person, while The Malawi Guardian will be represented by Mike Lyson Zgambo, Senior Editor, in facilitating communication under the partnership.

The agreement further recognises the role of Chinese-language media in promoting cooperation among media practitioners and strengthening economic, cultural and institutional exchanges between different regions.

Through the partnership, the two media institutions are expected to serve as a bridge for closer professional and cultural interaction, while contributing to broader social and economic development.

The agreement also provides for professional seminars, academic exchanges and other activities to be organised in the respective regions of the partner institutions.

Media practitioners from each side may be invited to participate in such activities, with the respective partner expected to provide support.

For substantive exchange and cooperation projects requiring specific arrangements, the agreement stipulates that separate agreements will be signed in accordance with relevant laws and regulations.

The institutions have also agreed that any matters not covered by the agreement will be addressed through consultation and, where necessary, additional agreements.

Speaking on the significance of the partnership, the signing marks an important step towards creating stronger links between Malawi’s media sector and Chinese-language media, providing opportunities for knowledge sharing, professional networking and collaborative media initiatives.

The agreement is expected to provide a foundation for sustained engagement between The Malawi Guardian and the Hong Kong Gonggong News Agency International Communication Centre, particularly in professional development, cultural exchange, information sharing and joint media activities.

The agreement was signed by representatives of the two institutions, with each party retaining a copy of the partnership document.
