Malawi Bureau of Standards Pushes for Global Acceptance of Local Product
The Malawi Bureau of Standards (MBS) has announced that Malawi is on track to improve the international acceptance of its locally produced goods.
This comes following the launch of several initiatives under the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the ISO Committee on Conformity Assessment (CASCO) in Blantyre on Monday.
Gloria Chaonamwene Mereka, Director of Quality Assurance at MBS, revealed that some Malawian products and services currently face rejection on global markets due to non-compliance with international standards. “With the launch of these initiatives, Malawians should expect a significant shift,” she said.
Victor Ndhlovu, Head of Foundation Science at Kamuzu University of Health Sciences (KUHeS), who attended the launch, noted that the initiatives will help stakeholders appreciate the importance of aligning local production with international benchmarks.
Established in 1972 through an Act of Parliament—Cap 51:02 of the Laws of Malawi (revised as Act No. 14 of 2012)—MBS is mandated to promote metrology, standardization, and quality assurance in the country.
