The 2026 tobacco marketing season has opened at the Lilongwe Auction Floors with renewed focus on strengthening market systems and restoring farmer confidence through fair trading and improved regulation.

Minister of Agriculture Rosa Mbilizi said government’s priority is to ensure that the market operates transparently from the onset, with close monitoring aimed at protecting farmers and promoting orderly trade.

“We are closely monitoring the market to make sure everything is done properly and farmers are protected,” she said, emphasizing the need for discipline and accountability across the value chain.

Mbilizi noted that collaboration among stakeholders will be key to maintaining stability in the sector and improving outcomes for farmers.

Tobacco Commission Vice Board Chairperson Eddie Mathanda said authorities are enhancing coordination efforts both locally and regionally to safeguard the integrity of the market.

He highlighted that engagement with neighboring countries, including Zambia, is part of broader efforts to ensure structured and legal trade flows that benefit Malawi’s economy.

Mathanda stressed that a well-regulated market is essential for maximizing returns and sustaining the country’s foreign exchange earnings.

Farmers Union representative Maness Nkhata expressed optimism about the season, noting that most of the tobacco presented at the floors is of good quality.

He said farmers are ready to meet market demands but require a supportive environment where pricing is fair and engagement with buyers is strengthened.

Abel Masache, President of the Tama Pharmacy Trust, underscored the importance of maintaining confidence in the auction system, saying it remains central to farmers’ livelihoods.

Stakeholders agree that improved coordination, stronger systems, and commitment to fairness will play a critical role in ensuring that the tobacco sector continues to support farmers and contribute meaningfully to Malawi’s economy.
