Organisers of the fourth edition of the Mzuzu City Half Marathon say everything is in place for this year’s 21-kilometre race scheduled for March 28 in Mzuzu.
Speaking during a press briefing on Wednesday, organising committee co-chairperson Peter Mumba said preparations have been finalised, with more than 100 athletes already registered for the competition. He expressed optimism that this year’s participation will surpass last year’s record of 119 runners.
“We are fully prepared to host this year’s marathon, and the response so far has been very encouraging. We have already registered over 100 athletes, and we are confident that the number will exceed last year’s turnout,” said Mumba.
Mumba further highlighted that the race continues to grow in popularity, attracting both professional and upcoming athletes from across the country.

Meanwhile, Northern Region Senior Sports and Recreation Development Officer Felix Yola commended the organisers for their consistency in promoting sports development in the region. He also revealed that this year’s event will go beyond athletics by incorporating environmental conservation activities.
“This is not just about competition, but also about giving back to the environment. The inclusion of a tree planting exercise is commendable and aligns with broader efforts to promote sustainability,” said Yola.
Winners of the marathon are set to receive a grand prize of K2 million, while second-place finishers will get K1.5 million and third-place athletes will take home K1 million.

The Mzuzu City Half Marathon has steadily established itself as one of the key sporting events in the Northern Region, fostering talent development and community engagement.
