Malawi–Mozambique Power Interconnection Project Nears Completion

Malawi’s 50 megawatt power interconnection project with has reached an advanced stage, raising hopes of easing persistent electricity shortages in the country.
Chief Secretary in the Office of the President and Cabinet, , disclosed this during the 60th Southern African Power Pool (SAPP) Executive Committee meeting held in . He said the project is part of broader efforts to strengthen Malawi’s energy sector and improve power supply.
“We are making progress with the Malawi-Mozambique interconnection. At the same time, we are working on major projects like Mpatamanga and Kamwamba, and by 2030, we should be talking about 1,000 megawatts,” said Saidi.
SAPP Executive Director, , said Malawi is expected to be connected to the regional power grid in the second quarter of this year, a move that will enhance electricity access and regional cooperation.
“We want all member states to contribute excess power so others can benefit, strengthening energy security across the SADC region,” said Dihwa.
He added that SAPP is prioritising improvements in transmission infrastructure, addressing system bottlenecks, and tackling vandalism of electricity equipment—an issue affecting many countries in the region.
The interconnection project is seen as a key step towards a more reliable and integrated power network, offering Malawi a pathway to reduced outages and improved energy stability.
