Do Your Part Initiative, in partnership with Habitat for Humanity, has come to the rescue of four families living in dilapidated houses through a housing project in Lusangazi aimed at providing safe, decent, and dignified homes.

Speaking on Monday during the groundbreaking ceremony, Executive Director Mathews Botha said the initiative seeks to improve housing conditions in Mzuzu, starting with four vulnerable families identified for support.

“We want to build proper and dignified houses around Mzuzu that can withstand the rainy season. We will also continue supporting vulnerable families in their day-to-day lives,” said Botha.

He said each house has a budget of up to K15 million, which will be raised through contributions and donations from partners, well-wishers, and other stakeholders.

“Each house requires about K12 million for construction materials alone. However, the total cost may reach K15 million when labour, water, and other expenses are included,” he explained.

Habitat for Humanity Construction Specialist Mayamiko Sayilesi commended the initiative, describing it as a significant contribution towards improving housing conditions for vulnerable households in Mzuzu.

Sayilesi emphasized the importance of partnerships and community participation in addressing housing challenges and ensuring that more families gain access to safe and decent shelter.

One of the beneficiaries, Happy Chimaliro from Group Village Headman Yavundika in Traditional Authority Thula, expressed gratitude for the support extended to his family.

“I am a father of four children and never expected such a development. Many people have promised to help us before, but their promises never materialized,” said Chimaliro.

He added that his family continues to face several challenges, including food shortages, inadequate clothing, and a lack of sufficient bedding.

Group Village Headman Yavundika also thanked the organization for constructing a house for the family and improving their living conditions.

“I am delighted that this family will now have a proper home. My appeal is that this initiative should be extended to other vulnerable families facing similar challenges,” said Yavundika.

The project is expected to run for two months. Do Your Part Initiative, in conjunction with Rhema Foundation and Habitat for Humanity, is spearheading the construction of the houses.
