Habitat for Humanity Malawi has launched its 2025–2030 Strategic Plan, an ambitious roadmap aimed at improving access to decent housing by facilitating the construction of 100,000 homes for vulnerable and disadvantaged Malawians.

Speaking during the launch in Lilongwe, Minister of Lands, Housing and Urban Development Chimwemwe Chipungu praised the initiative, describing it as a significant contribution towards achieving the country’s development goals under the Malawi 2063 Agenda.

Chipungu said the strategy complements government efforts to improve housing and urban development, noting that the ministry also plans to construct 12,000 houses for disadvantaged households.

He called on development partners, institutions, and other stakeholders to work hand in hand with government, emphasizing that national development requires collective effort.

“Government alone cannot meet the housing needs of all vulnerable Malawians or drive the country’s urbanisation agenda. Our doors remain open to partners willing to invest resources and expertise so that together we can provide decent, climate-resilient housing for our people,” said Chipungu.

Habitat for Humanity Malawi Programmes Director Mabvuto Kholowa reaffirmed the organisation’s commitment to implementing the strategy, saying the plan seeks to transform the lives of thousands of vulnerable families through improved housing.

He said the organisation aims to construct 800 new houses and repair or renovate 1,600 existing homes using a collaborative approach involving donors, development partners, volunteers, and local communities.

“We work with partners and supporters who contribute resources, while volunteers from across the world and within Malawi also take part in building houses for vulnerable families,” Kholowa said.

He added that government remains a critical partner in creating policies that make building materials more affordable and accessible to low-income households.

Beyond housing, the strategy also prioritises access to safe water, sanitation and hygiene services, off-grid energy solutions, solar power installations, and household economic empowerment initiatives.

Kholowa disclosed that implementing the five-year strategy will require an estimated US$10 million, which the organisation hopes to raise through donors, well-wishers, and other partners. He appealed to individuals and organisations to support the initiative to ensure its successful implementation.

Habitat for Humanity Malawi has been operating in the country since 1985, while the global Habitat for Humanity movement was founded in 1976. Through the new strategy, the organisation aims to positively impact at least 12,000 Malawians over the next five years.
