UTM President Calls for Forensic Probe into Amaryllis Hotel Scandal, Slams Government’s ‘Zacchaeus Economy

UTM President Dalitso Kabambe has called for a forensic investigation into the controversial Amaryllis Hotel purchase, faulting the Executive for failing to act on the matter.
Speaking on Times Exclusive, Kabambe emphasized that the Executive, with its prosecutorial powers, should have taken the lead on the matter for the good of the country.
Kabambe linked Malawi’s economic challenges to high inflation, foreign exchange shortages, and poor governance, saying the country is paying the price for bad decisions.
He highlighted the need for accountability and transparency in government dealings, particularly in matters of public interest.
The UTM leader also raised concern over political appointments, saying they undermine service delivery and force the country to repeat the same mistakes in cycles.
“People should be appointed on merit,” he stressed, warning that appointing sympathizers is a recipe for disaster.
On the plane crash that killed former Vice President Saulos Chilima and others, Kabambe said they welcome calls for another inquiry, emphasizing the need for truth and accountability.
He further blamed corruption for crippling development and businesses, noting that it remains unabated as contracts continue to be awarded corruptly.
Kabambe criticized the DPP-led government for introducing punitive taxes, which he described as a “Zacchaeus economy” that is suffocating the country’s growth.
He called for a more people-friendly approach to economic management, saying the current policies are hurting ordinary Malawians.
The UTM leader’s comments come amid growing discontent with the government’s handling of the economy and allegations of corruption.
As the country grapples with these challenges, Kabambe’s call for a forensic investigation into the Amaryllis Hotel purchase is likely to add to the pressure on the government to act.
