Lawmaker Mavuto Sandram Scott of Thyolo South-Thekerani has raised concerns about the lack of security services in his constituency, particularly in areas under Traditional Authorities Thukuta, Nsabwe, and Mbawera.

The Thekerani Police Unit, which was renovated after being burnt down by irate locals in 2022, remains unstaffed.

This has resulted in residents facing significant challenges in accessing essential services, including police reports for national identity card registration.

They are forced to travel long distances to Muona in Nsanje, Masambanjati, and Thyolo police stations, exacerbating general insecurity in the area.

However, there’s hope for resolution. Last month, the Minister of Homeland Security approved the deployment of officers to Thekerani Police Unit. A stakeholders’ meeting, scheduled for October 24, will bring together the police, district commissioner, MP, and other stakeholders to address the issue.

According to Edward Kabango, South East Regional Police spokesperson, this meeting aims to map out a solution to ensure the community’s security needs are met.

Effective policing requires collaboration between authorities and stakeholders. Data-driven deployment strategies can optimize police presence where it’s needed most.

By engaging with the community and addressing their concerns, the police can build trust and improve overall safety.
