Stronger Partnerships Key to Combating Hypertension, Says NCD Alliance Malawi
As Malawi joins the global community in commemorating World Hypertension Day on Saturday, 17 May 2025, the NCD Alliance Malawi has called for strengthened partnerships among key stakeholders to curb the rising toll of non-communicable diseases (NCDs), particularly hypertension.
This year’s commemoration is themed “Measure Your Blood Pressure Accurately, Control It, and Live Longer,” underscoring the critical need for early detection and effective management of high blood pressure.
In a statement signed by Project Officer Esther Nyirenda, the Alliance urged collaboration among healthcare professionals, local leaders, civil society organizations, and policymakers to boost public awareness and expand access to quality blood pressure monitoring services.
“Hypertension accounts for a significant portion of the 32% of deaths linked to NCDs in Malawi. Tackling it requires coordinated efforts across all sectors to raise awareness, promote healthy lifestyles, and ensure early treatment,” said Nyirenda.
She warned that hypertension, often referred to as a “silent killer,” increases the risk of severe complications including heart disease, stroke, kidney failure, and premature death. “It affects both rural and urban populations, and the need for urgent, unified action is evident,” she added.
The Alliance commended government initiatives aimed at combating NCDs, such as community-based health screenings, awareness campaigns, and lifestyle promotion. These efforts, Nyirenda noted, are making vital health services more accessible—especially in hard-to-reach areas.
The Alliance also encouraged Malawians to take personal responsibility by routinely checking their blood pressure, eating a low-salt and low-fat diet, exercising regularly, avoiding tobacco and alcohol, managing stress, and following medical advice where necessary.
World Hypertension Day, marked annually on May 17, was established in 2005 by the World Hypertension League (WHL) to raise awareness about high blood pressure, which affects over a billion people worldwide—many unknowingly.
The NCD Alliance Malawi is a national network of civil society organizations committed to reducing preventable illnesses, disabilities, and premature deaths from non-communicable diseases and related injuries in Malawi.
