Malawi Congress Party (MCP) delegates on Saturday unanimously endorsed Parliamentarian Catherine Gotani Hara as the party’s candidate for Mzimba North East during primary elections held at Emvuyeni Primary School.

Gotani Hara, who is the Speaker of Parliament and MCP Vice President, said the endorsement reflects the trust her constituents have placed in her, pledging to continue with her development agenda.

“I am grateful for the trust and support from my constituents and the party. The endorsement shows that people are eager to see me continue representing them,” said Gotani Hara.

She noted that through the Constituency Development Fund (CDF) and support from various partners, she has implemented several development projects in the sectors of education, health, water, and transport.

“Several projects have been completed in my area. These include electricity connections in places like Emvuyeni, Zombwe, and Baula; new health centres at Chimbongondo and Kayombo; renovations of schools; and road maintenance. These efforts are earning me the people’s trust to continue leading,” she added.

Gotani Hara further revealed that construction of the Ekwendeni Police Unit and accompanying police housing is currently underway.

In the councillor primaries, incumbent Ekwendeni Ward Councillor and M’mbelwa District Council Chairperson Morgan Tembo retained his position with 409 votes. Geoffrey Ndhlovu and Ronald Mwale followed with 255 and 158 votes, respectively.

In Emsizini Ward, Bonke Chitaya emerged victorious with 354 votes, defeating Zakeyo Soko, who garnered 100 votes, and Andrew Mhone, who received 46.

Presiding officer for the primaries, Aram Beza, commended the process as a reflection of the people’s will, describing the elections as free, fair, and transparent.

“The people endorsed Gotani Hara and elected councillors in a free, fair, and transparent manner. Their will has been fulfilled,” said Beza.

The party is expected to conduct primary elections in Nkhata Bay South on Sunday.
