Newly registered nonprofit People First Foundation has challenged young Malawians to shift their mindset and begin addressing local challenges using solutions rooted in the Malawian context.

Speaking on Saturday, 25 May 2025, during an event welcoming new volunteers to the organization, founder and executive director Lumbani Kaunda said the foundation was established to empower young people, champion their rights, and promote their active participation in decision-making processes and inclusive education.

“Time is over for Malawians to sit back and wait for other nations to solve our problems when we have the capacity and solutions within our own communities,” Kaunda said.

He outlined that the organization will focus on building leadership skills among the youth through workshops, mentorship programs, and training initiatives that nurture self-confidence, critical thinking, and decision-making abilities, while promoting collaboration and knowledge-sharing.

Kaunda further announced that the foundation will advocate for youth rights, encourage civic engagement, and foster innovation and entrepreneurship. As part of its education initiatives, the organization plans to conduct fundraising campaigns to support underprivileged secondary and university students. Additionally, it will establish a free nursery school in Mzuzu aimed at providing early childhood education to children who cannot afford school fees.

He stressed that People First Foundation is nonpartisan and operates independently, without funding or influence from any political party. Kaunda added that the foundation brings together volunteers from diverse backgrounds, united by a common goal of driving positive change in Malawi.
