Nkholongo Stars Crowned Champions of K3.5 Million Kettie Nyalongwe Trophy
The K3.5 million Kettie Nyalongwe Trophy came to a thrilling conclusion on Sunday, 21 December 2025, at Khamba Ground, with Nkholongo Stars emerging champions after edging Ng’ongo FC 2–1 in an entertaining final.
The decider attracted a large crowd of football fans who witnessed a tense and competitive match, as Nkholongo Stars displayed determination and discipline to secure the prestigious trophy.
Speaking after the final, tournament sponsor Gift Mkandawire said the competition was achieving its intended purpose of developing grassroots talent.

“This tournament is not just about winning trophies. It is about giving young players a platform to showcase their abilities and prepare them for bigger opportunities,” said Mkandawire. “What we have seen here shows that there is a lot of untapped talent in our communities.”
The tournament also produced excitement in other sporting disciplines. In netball, Lupaso Queens dominated Beforward Sisters 36–12 in a match that highlighted their superior teamwork and fitness. In girls’ football, Madodi FC were in ruthless form as they dismantled Gimtec FC 5–0.
Organising Committee Chairperson Chimwemwe Ngwira described the tournament as a success, emphasizing its role in talent identification.
“We are proud that the Kettie Nyalongwe Trophy continues to discover hidden talent,” said Ngwira. “Some of the players who featured here have the potential to play at higher levels if they are given proper support.”
During the prize presentation ceremony, Nkholongo Stars received K600,000 as champions, while runners-up Ng’ongo FC pocketed K300,000. Netball winners Lupaso Queens earned K150,000, with Beforward Sisters receiving K100,000. In girls’ football, Madodi FC were awarded K150,000, while Gimtec FC took home K100,000.
Former Flames legend Lawrence Waya, who graced the closing ceremony, urged young athletes to remain disciplined and focused.
“Talent alone is not enough,” said Waya. “You need discipline, hard work and respect for the game if you want to succeed.”
The successful conclusion of the tournament once again underlined the importance of community-sponsored competitions in promoting sports development and youth empowerment.
