The Association of Malawians in Ireland (AMAI) has underscored the strength, unity and growing impact of the Malawian diaspora with the successful hosting of the 2025 AMAI Gala Awards in Dublin.

Rather than just celebrating individual success, the colourful ceremony highlighted the collective contribution of Malawians in Ireland across business, arts, sports, charity and entertainment, showcasing how the community continues to thrive abroad.

Among the top honourees was Emillah Omah, who scooped the Business/Entrepreneur Woman of the Year award, with Sean Patel also recognised in the business category. The Charity of the Year award went to Women of Substance organisation for its outstanding work in community upliftment.

In arts and culture, Sarah Chilunga was honoured for her contribution, while sports excellence was celebrated through awards to Joshua Gama (Sportsman of the Year) and Phangano Ndhlovu (Sportswoman of the Year). Young Sportsperson of the Year accolades were presented to Mike Kayange and Grace Simati in recognition of their rising talent.

The ceremony also acknowledged intellectual and digital influence within the community. Nathaniel Kashanga and Thumbiko Nyasulu were named Best Young and Adult Chess Players respectively, while Carol Kalonga walked away with the Social Media Personality of the Year award.

In entertainment, Vida Brown Germano claimed the DJ of the Year title, as Ian and Hannah were crowned Entertainers of the Year for their consistent contribution to the creative space.

The evening was further energised by vibrant performances from Malawian music stars Driemo and Temwa, whose appearances brought a strong sense of home and cultural pride to the celebration.

Speaking at the event, AMAI President Henry Mkumbira Phiri called on Malawians living in Ireland to remain united and supportive of one another.

“Let us stay focused and committed to uplifting our community. Together, we can achieve great things,” said Phiri.

The 2025 AMAI Gala Awards once again reaffirmed the organisation’s mission of promoting unity, recognising excellence and strengthening the Malawian community in Ireland.
