Commissioner of Immigration Vivian Kasambo has issued a stern warning to immigration officers against exploiting the ongoing passport printing crisis for personal gain. Speaking in Mangochi during a meeting with officers from the eastern region, Kasambo condemned the practice of demanding kickbacks from passport applicants.

Kasambo highlighted that Malawians expect a streamlined and transparent passport application process, free from corruption. “It is wrong to indulge in corrupt practices simply because there are many people applying for passports. We are expecting that passport printing should be conducted on a first-come, first-served basis,” Kasambo emphasized.

The recent surge in passport applications has exacerbated the issue, leading to reports of bribery and other forms of exploitation. Kasambo’s remarks reflect a commitment to addressing these concerns and ensuring that the process remains fair and efficient.

In addition to tackling corruption, Kasambo revealed plans to expand passport printing services by establishing offices in other districts, including Mzimba, Salima, Karonga, and Chikwawa. This initiative aims to provide easier access to passport services for citizens across the country, further supporting the goal of a more equitable and transparent application process.

Kasambo’s proactive approach underscores a dedication to improving the integrity of the immigration system and addressing the challenges faced by applicants in the current environment.
