HRCC urges calm amid ongoing investigation into plane crash
The Human Rights Consultative Committee (HRCC) has called for calm and patience among Malawians as investigations into the plane crash that resulted in the deaths of former Vice President Saulos Chilima and eight others continue.
In a statement read by HRCC Chairperson Robert Mkwezalamba during a press briefing in Lilongwe, the committee condemned the premature conclusions drawn by some citizens regarding the investigation’s progress. Mkwezalamba emphasized that such actions undermine the investigation and exacerbate public uncertainty.
The HRCC has also urged authorities to maintain transparency in their communications about the investigation to prevent further speculation and misinformation. This call for openness aims to ensure that the public receives accurate updates and fosters trust in the ongoing process.
The German Federal Bureau of Aircraft Accident Investigation (BFU), which is leading the investigation, released a preliminary report yesterday. However, the report did not disclose the cause of the crash, stating that a definitive explanation will be provided in the final report, expected in the summer of 2025.
The HRCC’s appeal underscores the importance of patience and due process while awaiting comprehensive findings from the BFU.
