As Malawians continue to react to the latest fuel and electricity price hikes, a member of the Concerned Citizens group says rising energy costs are pushing basic goods and services beyond the reach of ordinary people.

Edward Kambanje told local media that true government leadership lies in absorbing economic shocks, not transferring the full burden to citizens.
He said reforms should prioritise protecting people, especially during difficult economic times.

Kambanje noted that while the automatic fuel pricing mechanism is not inherently wrong, applying it without cushioning measures results in what he terms “automatic suffering,” as transport costs rise and trigger increases in commodity prices.

“Fuel hikes have an effect similar to currency devaluation, as everything becomes expensive.

The risks of these increases outweigh the benefits and continue to erode the purchasing power of Malawians,” Kambanje said.

Concurring with Kambanje, Mulanje business operator Kassim Nema, says that although fuel price hikes were expected, the increase has come at the wrong time when Malawians face serious economic hardship, describing the 40 percent rise as excessive.
