Concerned citizens in Malawi, under the banner of the People Power Movement, have called on the country’s leaders to demonstrate compassion by prioritizing initiatives that directly impact citizens’ welfare.

They argue that while honoring the legacy of the late Gwanda Chakuamba Phiri is valuable, the allocation of K2.7 billion toward constructing his mausoleum should be reconsidered in favor of addressing more pressing needs.

In a statement dated November 5, 2024, and signed by Edward Kambanje and Oliver Nakoma, the group appeals to the Ministry of Local Government, Unity, and Culture, and other government bodies to reassess the timing of this expenditure.

The Concerned Citizens suggest that these resources could instead be directed toward immediate issues such as food shortages, fuel supply challenges, and essential drug shortages in public healthcare facilities.

The citizens emphasize the need for sustainable governance, urging that funds be reallocated toward purchasing maize for ADMARC and other distribution networks to alleviate food scarcity.

Additionally, they highlight the severe fuel shortages impacting various sectors and stress that restoring fuel availability should be a top priority. The statement also notes the critical shortages of essential drugs in public hospitals, with many patients unable to access necessary treatments, and urges investment in healthcare supplies.
