Chakwera to attend SADC 43rd Ordinary Summit

The State President, Dr Lazarus Chakwera will attend the Southern Africa Development Community (SADC) 43rd Ordinary Summit of Heads of State and Government in Angola which wwill be held on 17 August, 2023 in Luanda.

Chakwera through his Facebook page said the Summit will be followed by the 15th BRICS Outreach Plus Summit from 22nd to 24th August where Malawi is one of the 67 non-member countries invited to attend.

The President said he will use the meeting to align with fellow leaders from the SADC member states on how to best they can use human and financial capital to drive sustainable industrialization within the block.

“The SADC summit is an opportune moment to assert Malawi’s development aspirations within the region and widen our economic prospects through meaningful regional integration and cooperation,” said Chakwera .

The SADC 43rd Ordinary Summit of Heads of State and Government is being held under the theme, :Human and financial capital: The key drivers for sustainable industrialisation of the SADC Region”

The SADC Summit is responsible for the overall policy direction and control of functions of the Community, ultimately making it the policy-making institution of SADC.

The Ordinary SADC Summit is held every year and is attended by Heads of State and Government from the 16 SADC Member States namely, Angola, Botswana, Comoros, Democratic Republic of Congo, Eswatini, Lesotho, Madagascar, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Seychelles, South Africa, United Republic of Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe. It is also attended by the heads of continental and regional bodies as observers.

The 43rd SADC Summit will be preceded by meetings of the SADC Senior Officials and Council of Ministers who prepare the agenda for the Heads of State and Government. The SADC Council of Ministers oversees the functioning and development of SADC and ensures that policies are properly implemented.

The Council consists of Ministers from each Member State, usually from the Ministries of Foreign Affairs, Economic Planning, or Finance.

“As for the BRICS summit, we will champion our cause with emerging and fellow developing markets through multilateral cooperation to rebalance the world’s economic and political tectonics and make the global system conducive for inclusive growth.

“I also expect to engage two BRICS key members, China and India, on easing our debt repayment schedule,” adds Chakwera.
