The Basketball Association of Malawi (BAM) has hailed CDH Investment Bank’s sponsorship of the national basketball tournament as a game-changer for the sport’s development in the country. The association says the support is creating opportunities for young, talented players to sharpen their skills and pursue economic advancement.

Speaking on Saturday at the conclusion of the two-day 2025 National Basketball Championship held at the KUHES Sports Complex in Blantyre, BAM’s Director of Marketing and Media, Ntchiwa Chiwaya, expressed satisfaction with the progress being made through the tournament.

“Frankly speaking, we have observed the growing popularity of basketball among the youth since CDH Investment Bank began sponsoring the sport. We are now identifying new talent that will shape the future of basketball in Malawi,” said Chiwaya.

He noted that the tournament saw stiffer competition than in previous years, particularly from teams in the northern region, largely due to the stakes involved.

“This region previously lacked exposure due to sponsorship challenges, but we’re now seeing significant progress,” he added.

Chiwaya revealed that the tournament attracted 16 teams nationwide—eight men’s teams and eight women’s teams. Prize money included MK4.5 million for the overall winners in both male and female categories, MK2 million for runners-up, and MK1 million for third-place finishers.

In a separate interview, CDH Investment Bank’s Chief Business Development Manager, Jamal Kamoto, reaffirmed the bank’s commitment to continue sponsoring basketball in Malawi. He noted the sport’s potential to contribute to mental, physical, and economic development for both individuals and the nation.

“As part of our corporate social responsibility, we want to elevate basketball to the same level of recognition as football and netball, which have thrived due to strong support. That’s why we’re committed to increasing our sponsorship to ensure broad participation across both rural and urban areas,” Kamoto said.

Kamoto also disclosed that the bank had increased its sponsorship from MK20 million last year to MK44 million this year, impressed by the sport’s growth since the partnership began.

“We’ve witnessed transparency and accountability in how the sponsorship is handled, which is vital for maintaining confidence and support in the sports sector,” he added.

In the veterans’ category, Top City claimed the top spot, while Victor Jere from FDH Bricks was named Most Valuable Player. Kukoma Eagles took bronze, and Bravehearts earned the gold award, with Orleen Londo of Bravehearts recognized as MVP.

In the men’s category, FDH Bricks won bronze, CDH Investment Bank claimed silver, and Faad Billy of Bravehearts received the gold MVP award.
