Call for Policies to Enhance Women’s Managerial Representation
A significant call has been made for the implementation of policies aimed at increasing women’s representation in managerial positions to advance gender equality in Malawi. Teresa Ndanga, a Commissioner with the Malawi Human Rights Commission (MHRC), highlighted this urgent need during a recent media training session in Lilongwe.
Ndanga emphasized that despite ongoing efforts, a substantial gender gap persists, indicating that more action is required to support and complement the MHRC’s initiatives. Her comments were made during an intensive, day-long training focused on gender-sensitive reporting.
The training, held at the Lilongwe Teachers Development Centre, is designed to bolster journalists’ capabilities in addressing gender equality and human rights issues. This effort is part of a broader initiative to improve media coverage on gender matters and foster a more inclusive society.
Organized by the MHRC with financial backing from the Government of Iceland, the training underscores the crucial role of media in promoting gender equality. By enhancing journalists’ skills in this area, the MHRC aims to drive policy changes and societal shifts that will better support women’s advancement into leadership roles.
This call for action reflects a growing recognition of the need for systemic changes to ensure that gender equality is more than just an aspiration, but a reality in Malawi’s leadership landscape.
