Former President Bakili Muluzi has backed the United Democratic Front’s (UDF) decision to invite the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) to their national convention, stressing the importance of unity and inclusiveness.

Muluzi emphasized that the UDF’s ideology promotes dialogue and does not endorse hatred or division.

“The UDF has always believed that political differences do not equate to enmity,” he stated, urging party members to adopt these values.

Muluzi’s remarks came after some UDF supporters questioned the invitation, prompting the MCP to decline attending the event.

However, Muluzi argued that engaging with other parties is crucial for national progress and strengthens democracy, rather than weakening the party.

The UDF National Convention, attended by 1,200 delegates, serves as a platform for reflection on the party’s values and future direction ahead of the 2025 general elections.

Muluzi’s stance on political tolerance reinforces the UDF’s commitment to peaceful coexistence among Malawi’s political players.
