Police arrest boat captain for overloading in Nkhata-Bay

Barely few days after a picture of an overloaded water vessel went viral on social media, police in Nkhata-Bay in Conjunction with Likoma Police arrested Francis Foloma 74, after the boat was identified as Makutuwima which operates between Nkhata Bay and Likoma.

Foloma, captain of the said boat was arrested on September 20, 2023 following his failure to ensure safety of the vessel by overloading which is against section 150 (d) of Inland Waters Shipping Act.

He is expected to appear before court on Monday to answer the charge levelled against him.

Meanwhile, police in the district are advising all boat owners and captains to make sure they avoid all acts that put threats on passengers who depend on their vessels for transportation. Police further warn captains of water vessels that the law will take its course whenever they breach any laws guiding the water transport.

Francis Foloma hails from Ulisa Village, traditional authority Mkumpha in Likoma District.
