EAM introduces Malawi National eSports Championship

The eSports Association of Malawi (EAM) has announced the introduction of the Malawi National eSports Championship which aimed at fostering the growth of the eSports in Malawi.

According to the press release co-signed by the Co-founder of the Association, Robert Cheleuka, EAM said the eSports organization is set to develop and regulate the sports discipline in Malawi.

“Esports Association of Malawi believes in the power of esports to nurture essential skills like hand-eye coordination, while also introducing participants to marketable jobs and skills. EAM intends to empower grassroots gaming centers and support initiatives such as MDF’s esports
program which was recently introduced at the MDF sports Festival to empower the youth and contribute to their personal and professional growth,” reads the press release in part.

The move is being spearheaded by the King of The Grid eSports Limited (KOTG) which is a pioneering eSports organization founded in 2020.

Electronic sports, or in short esports, are video games that are played competitively, either online or offline.

According to Statista, The video game industry is projected to earn 384billion USD in 2023 and is also larger than the music and movie industry combined in terms of revenue.

This exponential growth is expected to continue as the industry evolves. Having witnessed an unquestionable demand for gaming in Malawi through game zones, the Esports Association is determined to scale up gradually, opening up new avenues for participation and exploration.

KOTG Ltd is affiliated to the Global Esports Federation (GEF) based in Singapore, one of the world’s leading authorities in the development of Esports.

GEF facilitated the introduction of
Esports at the Olympics which is now officially a part of its offering. This notable recognition of Esports reinforces their commitment to developing esports as a recognized sport and driving the growth of competitive gaming in the nation.

GEF in collaboration with Africa Esports Development Federation (AEDF) and KOTG, conducted the Africa Esports Championship at Region 5 Youth Games in Lilongwe 2022 where the Esports titles were eFootball and Street Fighter V.

Meanwhile, The Esports Association of Malawi has recently applied for approval from the Malawi National Sports Council, with their sights set on hosting a National Championship, a crucial milestone for their recognition.

Additionally, the association is actively seeking partnerships and sponsorships from banking institutions, Internet Service Providers (ISPs), NGOs, and well-wishers, to collectively support and nurture the thriving esports community in Malawi.

The association has expressed it’s commitment to promoting diversity and inclusion in esports.

EAM is planning to incorporate women’s- only esports events, paving the way for female empowerment and participation in this dynamic discipline.

“The Esports Association would like to raise awareness that there are international esports events that are available for Malawians to participate in through the Global Esports Federation such as the Global Esports Games in Riyadh Saudi Arabia. Before venturing into international Participating there is a need to set up local structures and competitions to train esports athletes,” adds the press release.
