Kaunda Calls for Promotion of Detectives Behind Dr. Chomo Murder Arrest

Member of Parliament for Nkhata Bay Central, Simon Vuwa Kaunda, has urged the Ministry of Homeland Security to promote police detectives who arrested a suspect in connection with the murder of Dr. Atughanile Chomo.

Speaking in Parliament on Friday, Kaunda said recognising the officers’ efforts would boost morale within the Malawi Police Service and motivate officers to work harder in combating crime.

He said rewarding outstanding performance is common in other sectors, drawing a comparison with sports where teams such as Blue Eagles FC are recognised after winning league and cup titles.

Responding on behalf of the Minister of Homeland Security, Minister of Defence Feston Kaupa said the ministry would consider the proposal to promote the detectives.

Meanwhile, Leader of Opposition Simplex Chithyola Banda expressed concern over what he described as a growing trend of attacks on medical professionals.

He questioned why doctors were increasingly becoming targets of violent crime in the country and called for greater efforts to ensure their safety.

The debate follows the arrest of a 25-year-old suspect in connection with Dr. Chomo’s murder.

Police on Thursday confirmed the arrest of Macmillan Mvevula, of Mtika Village under Traditional Authority Ngolongoliwa in Thyolo District, who is currently in custody as investigations continue.
