The Taekwondo Association of Malawi (TAM) has unveiled a nationwide charity outreach programme aimed at supporting vulnerable elderly people while promoting community service through the values of Taekwondo.

The initiative, themed “Helping Our Elderly, Building a Better Community,” will be officially launched on Saturday, 11 July 2026, from 10:00 a.m. in Salima District, with Salima Taekwondo Club hosting the inaugural event.

The launch will begin with the donation of food and other essential items to elderly members of the community before an Open Taekwondo Tournament takes place at Malimba in Salima. Proceeds from the tournament, together with public donations, will be used to support elderly people across the country.

According to the Association, the programme is designed to promote care, respect and dignity for older persons, while raising awareness of the challenges they face. It also seeks to mobilise resources for charitable outreach initiatives, prepare athletes for upcoming regional and national Taekwondo championships, and strengthen collaboration among government institutions, development partners, the private sector, local communities and the sporting fraternity.

Speaking on the initiative, Taekwondo Association of Malawi President Major Louis Msukwa said the programme reflects the association’s commitment to using sport as a platform for social responsibility and community development.

Following its launch in Salima, the initiative will be rolled out to other districts as an annual nationwide outreach programme aimed at improving the lives of elderly citizens.

The Association has since called on government institutions, corporate organisations, non-governmental organisations, traditional leaders, community members and well-wishers to support the initiative through financial contributions or donations of food, clothing, blankets, toiletries and other essential items.

For the Salima outreach, donations and financial contributions will be coordinated through the host, Nathan Chimaliro of Salima Taekwondo Club, who has been designated as the focal person for the successful implementation of the programme.

TAM says it hopes the initiative will inspire greater compassion and volunteerism while ensuring that elderly citizens receive the care, recognition and support they deserve.
