Malawi Prepares National Celebration for Historic Scorchers Campaign
Malawi is preparing to honour the Malawi Women’s National Football Team, the Scorchers, following their historic run at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) and qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
The team is expected to arrive at Kamuzu International Airport at about 3:30 p.m., where government officials, football authorities, security agencies and corporate partners will welcome the players following their campaign in Morocco.
The Scorchers finished the tournament as runners-up after losing 3-0 to Cameroon in Sunday’s final. Despite the defeat, Malawi secured a historic place at the 2027 Women’s World Cup in Brazil—the country’s first appearance at the global tournament.
The Ministry of Youth, Sports and Culture, Football Association of Malawi (FAM) and National Bank of Malawi (NBM) have organised a public celebration featuring a procession from the airport through parts of Lilongwe, followed by a dinner.
The Malawi Defence Force, Malawi Police Service and Lilongwe City Council are also expected to support the celebrations.
Ministry spokesperson MacMillan Mwale said the team deserved national recognition for representing Malawi with distinction and bringing pride to the country.
NBM Marketing and Corporate Affairs Manager Akossa Hiwa said the bank would host a breakfast for the players and officials on Thursday to celebrate their achievement.
FAM president Fleetwood Haiya said the Scorchers had given Malawians a rare moment of hope and unity, describing their World Cup qualification as an extraordinary milestone.
President Peter Mutharika also praised the team for uniting Malawians, saying the Scorchers had demonstrated the power of sport to bring the country together.
Football analyst George Chiusiwa said the players deserved recognition but urged stakeholders to go beyond ceremonial celebrations. He called for meaningful material rewards for the players in appreciation of their historic achievement.
The Scorchers’ campaign has therefore grown beyond football, with their WAFCON success and World Cup qualification providing Malawi with a rare moment of national pride, unity and optimism.
