JOHANNESBURG-Leaders from the Southern African Development Community (SADC) met virtually on Wednesday, 17 December 2025, to discuss the ongoing political and security challenges in Madagascar.

Speaking from South Africa, President Cyril Ramaphosa thanked all participating member states for attending the summit and reaffirmed the importance of regional collaboration in resolving critical issues.

He recalled that a previous meeting held on 16 October had examined Madagascar’s situation and noted that its outcomes, compiled in a formal report, continue to guide deliberations at the summit.

President Ramaphosa highlighted the shared responsibility of SADC member states to promote peace and stability in the region, while acknowledging progress achieved over the past few years. He also pointed out the ongoing security concerns in East Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and the political instability in Madagascar.

The summit included discussions on electing an interim SADC chair to steer the organization in its next phase. President Ramaphosa concluded by expressing optimism that the summit would yield concrete measures to restore peace and stability in Madagascar, reinforcing regional cooperation and cohesion.
