Following disputed elections in Tanzania, Nairobi urges Dar es Salaam to protect Kenyan nationals caught in escalating violence.

Kenya has called on Tanzania to guarantee the safety of its nationals amid unrest following last week’s contested presidential election.

The government expressed concern over reports that some Kenyan citizens living in Tanzania have been affected by the post-election turmoil.

Kenyan Foreign Affairs Minister Musalia Mudavadi confirmed that formal communications had been sent to Tanzanian authorities requesting protection measures.

An estimated 250,000 Kenyans reside in Tanzania, many of whom are traders, business operators, and families across border regions.

The unrest followed the October 29 presidential election in Tanzania, where President Samia Suluhu Hassan was declared the winner with a landslide 98% of the votes.

Opposition groups and some international observers have questioned the credibility of the election, leading to protests in major cities including Dar es Salaam.

In response to demonstrations, the Tanzanian government deployed security forces, imposed curfews, and restricted internet access to curb the unrest.

The Kenyan government emphasized that the protection of its citizens remains a top priority during the ongoing instability.

Kenya’s diplomatic mission in Dar es Salaam has been actively reaching out to affected nationals to provide guidance and consular assistance.

Human rights organizations have warned about possible xenophobic targeting of Kenyans amid the unrest, urging both governments to act responsibly.

The Kenyan government has advised its citizens in Tanzania to submit contact and location information to facilitate consular support if needed.

Heightened security has also been implemented along the Kenya-Tanzania border, particularly at the Namanga crossing, to ensure the safety of travelers and goods.

Regional observers have highlighted the potential implications of the unrest for East African stability and cross-border relations between the two countries.

Authorities in both nations face pressure to protect citizens while maintaining diplomatic and trade relations during this period of political tension.
