Member of Parliament for Mzimba North, Catherine Mzumara, has called on the government to take urgent action to address the growing hunger crisis in her constituency, which has been severely affected by dry spells and water shortages.

In her maiden speech delivered on Friday during the State Opening of Parliament, Mzumara highlighted that many households in Mzimba North are struggling and require immediate food assistance and access to safe drinking water.

While commending President Peter Mutharika for his efforts to restore confidence among Malawians, Mzumara used the platform to stress that economic progress must go hand in hand with social welfare. Reflecting on her background as an economist, she acknowledged Malawi’s progress in achieving single-digit inflation, but cautioned that economic indicators mean little if communities remain hungry.

As Vice President of the UTM Party for the Northern Region, Mzumara emphasized that her party’s role in opposition is not to undermine the government, but to offer constructive solutions and guidance. She also underlined the importance of collaboration between UTM and the ruling DPP, noting their shared interest in building a stable and prosperous Malawi.

In closing, Mzumara joined other voices urging the government to reopen investigations into the tragic plane crash that claimed the life of former Vice President Saulos Chilima and eight others in Chikangawa Forest on June 10, 2024 — calling it a matter of national accountability and closure.
