Mpinganjiras Make Their Mark On Malawi Football
By: Draxon Maloya……
The Super League of Malawi served up a weekend of thrilling football, but all eyes were on one electrifying fixture — the “Mpinganjira Derby” between Mighty Wanderers and Ekhaya FC at Kamuzu Stadium.
The real headline, however, wasn’t just Wanderers’ narrow 1-0 victory — it was the symbolic clash between two generations of one family deeply entrenched in Malawi’s football fabric. Watching from the stands was Dr. Thomson Mpinganjira, sponsor and president of Mighty Wanderers, as his son, William Mpinganjira, led Ekhaya FC from the technical area.
In what has become a vivid display of family legacy in sport, the elder Mpinganjira — a respected businessman and philanthropist — has been a key figure in reviving and sustaining Wanderers, one of the country’s oldest football clubs. His leadership as board chairperson has propelled the team to new heights, emphasizing professionalism, community involvement, and player welfare.

Meanwhile, William is carving his own path with Ekhaya FC, injecting fresh ambition and vision into the league, setting the stage for a compelling father-versus-son rivalry that could redefine club competition in Malawi.
Kamuzu Stadium in Blantyre was transformed into a cauldron of emotion and excitement as the Mpinganjira family’s passion for football took center stage — not just as spectators, but as true stakeholders in the game’s future.
Their impact extends far beyond the pitch. Just recently, the Mpinganjira family funded a K17 million initiative to honour 17 retired football legends with K1 million each, a heartfelt gesture that underscores their dedication to recognising those who laid the foundation for Malawi’s footballing journey.

It’s clear the Mpinganjiras are not just shaping matches, they’re shaping the future of football in Malawi.
