The Ministry of Agriculture in Malawi is currently developing a cutting-edge software solution to enhance trade with neighboring countries.

This project, undertaken by the Southern African Trade and Connectivity Project (SATCP) with Mauritius Network Services (MNS) as consultants, aims to establish a modern Sanitary and PhytoSanitary information management system (SPSIS).

The SPSIS will streamline processes related to the import and export of plant and animal products, improving efficiency at the departments of agriculture research and animal health and livestock.

According to Gift Kalilangwe, Chief Systems Analyst at the Ministry of Agriculture, the system will reduce the time it takes for individuals to obtain certificates from institutions. This, in turn, will eliminate the need for traders to physically visit these departments.

Improved access to permits is expected to promote imports and exports, ultimately boosting revenue for the country. Wongani Gwazayani, Principal ICT Officer from the Department of Agriculture Services, emphasized the importance of managing the SPS system effectively to facilitate online trade and permit issuance.

Yoven Ayassamy, Technical Architect at Mauritius Network Services Limited, highlighted the potential for collaboration with African countries, including Malawi, to implement projects that drive growth and development.

By implementing this innovative system, Malawi’s Ministry of Agriculture is taking a significant step towards enhancing trade efficiency and promoting economic growth.
