Scorchers Target Historic World Cup Qualification Against Ghana

RABAT, Morocco — Malawi’s Scorchers are approaching their Women’s Africa Cup of Nations quarter-final against Ghana with determination, knowing that victory would secure the country’s first-ever qualification for the FIFA Women’s World Cup.

Head coach Lovemore Fazili says his players understand the significance of the high-stakes encounter and are ready to give everything when they face Ghana’s Black Queens at Al Madina Stadium on Sunday.

Fazili believes the Scorchers can draw confidence from their response against Zambia in their final Group C fixture. Although Malawi suffered a 2-1 defeat, the coach was encouraged by the team’s second-half performance, during which the players fought back and managed to score.

The coach says that fighting spirit has strengthened the team’s belief ahead of the quarter-final.

Malawi made history by finishing top of Group C in their first-ever WAFCON appearance. They now stand one victory away from reaching the semi-finals and, more importantly, earning a place at next year’s FIFA Women’s World Cup.

However, the Scorchers will have to cope with the absence of three important players.

Sabina Thom has been ruled out for the remainder of the tournament due to a knee injury, while Leticia Chinyamula and Madyina Nguluwe will miss the Ghana clash through suspension after accumulating two yellow cards.

Despite the setbacks, Fazili remains confident in the players available to him, saying the team has alternatives capable of filling the vacant positions.

He believes the quarter-final represents more than just another competitive fixture, describing World Cup qualification as an opportunity to create a lasting moment in Malawi’s football history.

A victory would not only send the Scorchers into the WAFCON semi-finals but would also guarantee Malawi a place at the FIFA Women’s World Cup — an achievement that has never been accomplished by the country’s senior women’s national team.

The match also gives Malawi an opportunity to overturn a difficult recent record against Ghana. The two teams met in a friendly last year, with Ghana winning 3-1, before the Black Queens recorded another victory, this time by a 4-0 margin, in July.

Those previous results, however, will count for little when the two sides meet in a competitive quarter-final with a World Cup place at stake.

For the Scorchers, the assignment is clear: overcome Ghana and turn their historic WAFCON campaign into an even bigger achievement by becoming World Cup qualifiers.
