The United Democratic Front’s (UDF) decision to invite the ruling Malawi Congress Party (MCP) to its elective conference on October 3, 2024, has sparked outrage among its members.

They express shock and dismay, citing the UDF’s history of championing democracy in Malawi and ousting the MCP from government in 1994 ¹. Many suspect that the invitation was influenced by President Lilian Patel, as Atupele Muluzi is currently abroad.

UDF supporters have taken to social media to vent their anger, warning the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) to rescind the invitation.

They vow never to partner with the MCP, labeling it an unreformed party with a history of atrocities ¹. The NEC is accused of accepting money from the MCP, with some demanding its return.

Political activist Bon Kalindo has joined the chorus, urging the UDF leadership to reconsider its decision.

He claims that MCP money is being used to sway UDF members, while Malawians suffer under the MCP’s rule ¹. Kalindo notes that nine DPP MPs are set to join the MCP, warning of a looming one-party state and dictatorship.

The controversy surrounding the MCP’s invitation highlights deep divisions within the UDF.

As the party prepares for its national convention, the question remains whether it will reconcile its democratic values with its decision to engage with the ruling party.
