Treason Case Against Former VP Moves Forward After 18 Years
In a significant development, the High Court of Malawi has rejected former Vice President Cassim Chilumpha’s request to dismiss his treason case permanently.
This decision paves the way for the long-standing case, which began in 2006, to finally move forward.
High Court Judge Ruth Chinangwa made it clear that the court had already ruled on a similar application in 2008, directing that the case would proceed with a jury.
She expressed her commitment to expediting the trial, acknowledging the numerous delays caused by both the court and the parties involved.
Chilumpha and his co-accused, Yusuf Matumula, face charges related to an alleged plot to assassinate former President Bingu wa Mutharika. Despite a 2008 ruling promising a conclusion within three months, the case has dragged on for nearly two decades.
With this latest ruling, the case is now set to proceed, bringing a sense of closure to a chapter that has lingered for far too long.
The outcome will be closely watched, given the significant implications for Malawi’s justice system and the individuals involved.
