The Karonga Catholic Diocese is harnessing the power of football to promote peace and unity among communities, particularly among youth, in Karonga. Vincent Bwinga, Project Coordinator for Conflict Transformation at the Diocese’s Catholic Commission for Justice and Peace (CCJP), emphasized the importance of sports in addressing violent conflicts.

Speaking at the semi-finals of the Bishop Peace Trophy at Chinsowolo Ground in Lupembe, Bwinga highlighted football’s potential to bring communities together, fostering unity and peace among young people.

“Football is not just a game; it’s a platform that can help youths channel their energy positively, preventing them from engaging in violent activities,” he stated.

The Bishop Peace Trophy, launched in April, aims to raise awareness and put an end to brutal killings of the elderly suspected of practicing witchcraft. The tournament features 36 teams from Traditional Authority Kyungu and Kilupula.

Yohane Mtalam, an adviser to Group Village Headman Mwenelupembe, praised the Diocese for utilizing football to raise awareness about conflicts and violence.

Lupembe Movers FC coach, Mike Mwasangwale, expressed delight after his team secured a place in the final with a 3-0 victory over Mulamba FC.

The 4 million kwacha tournament has provided valuable exposure for young players, including potential scouting opportunities. The final match will pit Lupembe Movers FC against Chicago FC.
