President Dr. Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera has emphasized the critical importance of the construction sector in advancing infrastructure development across Malawi.

Speaking on Monday during the official launch of National Construction Day at the Bingu International Convention Centre (BICC) in Lilongwe, President Chakwera reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to building a better Malawi for all.

“When I assumed office in 2020, my vision was to build an inclusive Malawi, and I am pleased with the progress we’ve made. Currently, over 600 projects are underway,” he said. “We will soon release a list of these initiatives so that Malawians can see and appreciate the development taking place.”

President Chakwera also expressed concern over individuals who discredit his government’s achievements, calling such behavior unproductive and divisive. He urged Malawians to promote unity, facts, and mutual respect, especially as the country approaches the election period.

“Nation-building is not a one-man task. It’s not about who started or completed a project, but about how much progress is made during one’s tenure,” he said. “Let us reject divisive narratives—they only hinder our national progress.”

He further stressed the importance of sustainable development, encouraging engineering and construction companies to prioritize quality and uphold high standards, saying, “We are not building Malawi for ourselves, but for future generations.”

Minister of Transport and Public Works, Jacob Hara, applauded President Chakwera’s leadership in transforming the construction and engineering sectors, highlighting the emphasis on quality and longevity.

Meanwhile, National Construction Industry Council (NCIC) Chairperson Jeremiah Mugaba also commended the President for championing quality infrastructure and supporting the council’s mission.

Held under the theme “Quality-driven construction industry: Building for generations”, the event attracted stakeholders from government, engineering, and the construction industry to celebrate progress and chart a path toward sustainable national development.
