MRA urges journalists to raise public awareness on new tax measures
The Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA) has called on journalists to play a leading role in raising public awareness about newly introduced tax measures, saying the media is well positioned to simplify complex tax issues for the general public.
Speaking on Monday in Mzuzu during a training workshop for members of the Nyika Media Club (NMC), MRA Corporate Affairs Manager Wilma Chalulu said journalists have a crucial responsibility in helping taxpayers understand recent tax reforms and their obligations.
“The media is a key partner in tax administration because journalists have the ability to explain complex tax issues in a way that ordinary Malawians can easily understand. We therefore expect you to help raise awareness and promote voluntary tax compliance,” said Chalulu.
She said reforms such as the introduction of the Electronic Invoicing System (EIS) require widespread public understanding to ensure their successful implementation.
“Citizens who understand why they pay taxes and how the new tax measures work are more likely to comply with their tax obligations. Your reporting can make a significant difference,” she added.
Nyika Media Club President Feston Malekezo described the training as timely and beneficial, saying it had equipped journalists with the knowledge needed to produce accurate and informative stories on taxation.

“This training has enhanced our understanding of the new tax measures. As journalists, we are now better positioned to provide the public with accurate, balanced, and informative reports that will improve tax awareness,” said Malekezo.
He said the media has a responsibility to bridge the information gap between MRA and taxpayers by ensuring that tax-related information is communicated clearly and accurately.
The workshop forms part of MRA’s broader strategy to strengthen collaboration with the media in promoting transparency, effective communication of tax policies, and increased taxpayer compliance.
The training covered several key topics, including Rental Income Tax, the Mobile Money Transfer Levy, the Motor Vehicle Insurance Levy, and the Electronic Invoicing System (EIS).
