Mchinji Villa Bench Boss in Bid to Reignite Team Spirit
Mchinji Villa Football Club has taken a bold step in an effort to revive its fading form by suspending head coach Eliya Phiri, citing a lack of positive results and dwindling community morale.
The NBS National Division League outfit, based in Mchinji, is currently languishing second from the bottom of the table with only three points all from draws and no win from their six fixtures so far. The club has yet to show signs of turning its fortunes around.
In a letter signed by the club’s General Secretary Caroline Mbewe, Chairperson John Chirwa, and Team Manager Denis Milala, Phiri’s suspension will last four weeks starting July 1, 2025.
“Management has decided to suspend you, due to unpalatable performance, which has resulted in no impact on the team as well as the community,” reads part of the letter.
Team Chairperson Chirwa told The Malawi Guardian that the decision was not taken lightly, but necessary to restore confidence.
“We owe it to our supporters and the community to be competitive. Something had to change,” said Chirwa.
Team Manager Milala added, “The coach has been given time to reflect. We hope this break will also give the team space to refocus.”

Stepping into the caretaker role is assistant coach Chifuniro Chimkokomo, who has been tasked with bringing energy and new ideas into the dressing room.
“This is an opportunity to regroup, try a new tactical approach, and get the boys believing again,” Chimkokomo said in a brief interview.
As Mchinji Villa recalibrates, league leaders Red Lions continue to set the pace with five wins from six, collecting 15 points. Mitundu Baptist, Bangwe All Stars, and Baka City are closely trailing with 12 points apiece.
At the bottom, Jenda United FC remain winless and pointless, having conceded 14 goals while scoring just two a stark reminder of the fierce competition in the league.
